For my paper, I have decided to research about ovarian cysts. Three and a half years ago, I was diagnosed with an abnormally large ovarian cyst within my left ovary, although it was almost misdiagnosed as cancer. Normally, the size of ovarian cysts ranges from a pea to an orange, but the one within my body grew to the size of a pineapple. Usually, women experience abdominal pain when a cyst forms, but throughout the many years that it could have existed for, I never felt such pain. During surgery, the gynecologist surgeon removed my no longer functioning ovary with the cyst inside, donating it to NIH.
My final paper will cover the different types of ovarian cysts and the range of symptoms that ovarian cyst carriers may experience. It will also include doctors' various reactions on how to deal with their patients' cysts and the impact ovarian cysts may have on women, especially those planning on having children. What exactly is an ovarian cyst? What makes it grow to various sizes? What are the different kinds of ovarian cysts? What effects would a cyst have if a women is pregnant? What other effects are there with an ovarian cyst?

Hey Tiffany
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear what you had to go through.
I like how you are writing about something you know on a personal level that can add a different view of what it feels like. I think you could also talk about how ovarian cysts are formed or what causes them to appear.

Your topic of choice seems to be one that will have a lot of voice in it, especially when asking the impact of the cysts on women who are planning to have children. I didn't even know that there were various types of ovarian cysts, new fact learned for the day :]
ReplyDeletePerhaps this is out of my boundaries to say but I am sincerely glad that you went through a painless experience.
I like how your topic is so personal but you are choosing to look at so many different sides. I think it will be important to set up a base for your paper because not many people are familiar with this topic. I also think it is great how you are relating the topic to possible hazards associated with pregnancy. I think you'll find a lot of interesting research!
ReplyDeleteMagic Thesis Sentence:
ReplyDeleteBy looking at ovarian cysts, we can see the possible consequences they may lead to, which most readers don't see; this is important because of the social impacts ovarian cysts may have on women planning on giving birth.
Tiffany,
ReplyDeleteI think you have some very nice, focused questions for this first paper -- as Kelly mentioned above, it will be really important to lay the groundwork for your reader in this paper, and I think you're already on the right track with that. With regard to your magic thesis sentence, I am very interested in what you will mean by "social impacts" -- is there a stigma attached to infertility? Is being a mother an integral part of womanhood/femininity? I'm thinking of the end of Gawande's article for this week, "The Score," and how the new mother felt like a failure for giving birth in ways she had not planned (getting an epidural, etc)... until she realize she had a baby, and that was more important than how. I think that once you do more research on the cysts and what physical effects they create, you will be able to do some really interesting work on the social impact. This will make your paper grow into something broader, which is precisely what I hope all the papers will do -- take something specific and personal and show us all why it should matter to us. I'm excited to see where you go with this.
On an unrelated note, I wanted to mention that I really like the stick-figure comics you attach to each of your posts. They really get me thinking.
